About

The House of Childhood is a teacher-owned store offering handmade resources that awaken the preschool aged child's spirit toward learning.  Our resources generally provide opportunities to build concentration, organise a work space, understand order and patterns, plan ahead for tasks, creatively problem-solve and self-regulate behaviour.

At The House of Childhood, we believe it is important that young children master these key areas to develop the sense of purpose and self-confidence necessary to sustain their curiosity and passion for lifelong learning.

Our Maker & Founder, Amy Brown

Amy Brown, our maker and founder, began her career in early childhood education in 2005.  She has worked in various settings including preschools, long day care centres, in-home care, inclusion support and Montessori education.  Amy.B took a break from traditional work settings when she had her son in 2008 and then again a few years later to homeschool him through his primary school years.

Amy.B now works as a room leader and nominated supervisor in a rural preschool. She’s currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts/Teaching (0-12 Years) and recently completed an Associate Diploma of Visual Arts and a Diploma of Holistic Integrated Creative Art Therapies (HICAT).

This diverse background allows Amy.B to creatively infuse the educational resources she develops with the learning outcomes from the Australian curriculum as well as the Montessori philosophy. Her lifelong passion for nurturing children's development shines through the meticulously handcrafted resources she makes.

What's In A Name?

The House of Childhood name is inspired by the first company in 1913 to sell the apparatus used in Montessori schools. This pioneering company provided educational materials based on a child-centered approach that aided self-directed learning and sensory development. The House of Childhood aims to carry on this legacy through high-quality, purpose-built educational resources that unlock children's innate passion for learning.

“What did you do as a child that made the hours pass like minutes?  Herein lies the key to your earthly pursuits.”
